IT’S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

This is the final week of summer class, after 7 weeks of class; summer class “for now” is finally ending. In that 7 weeks of class in Management information class I have learned new things in life like our wallet is a good example of a database and also one of my learning’s is that learning is not just in the classroom, we don’t just learn from our teachers, but we also learn from our experiences. And learning from our experiences is the best teacher. For instance, like our requirement during the midterms. Mr Enopia told us that we should interview a business organization and asked them if what IT System/s do they used. For our group we interviewed Marcian business hotel. Even though we didn’t knew what IT system they used but we learn new things about their company, like Marcian came from three names which is Marvin, Cidney and Ian. And they called it marcian business hotel because it is near the city proper so that businessmen wouldn’t have hassle if they’ll have business meeting and if their rooms are already full. They will call the other business hotel so that the customers will be accommodated right away.

Wallet is where we put our paper bills, coins and pictures. The picture compartment is where we put our pictures so that is our wallet will be lost they would know if whose wallet is it. But some put their paper money on the picture compartment. This is not the right compartment of money.  But it is the reality of life.  Data should be organized. For the data to be organized we should know the properties or characteristics of the wallet. If we know that this particular compartment is only for pictures, then those compartment/properties only accepts only pictures not paper bills or coins. In our wallet we have that compartment where cards or ID’s are being inserted. We can insert also paper money but it is not the right compartment of the paper money.

Database is composed of tables. And this table is composed of rows and columns and the intersection of the rows and columns is what you call as the cell.  (Insert about database) database are collection of related data, logical structured because it has tables that is related with each other. The unique identifier of a person is the ID number. It builds integrity. If the data is inconsistent the data is incorrect. IT is unique. Because there is integrity. Unique identifier is the primary key.

We also talked about how emerging technologies are beginning to incorporate more of the senses. Emerging technologies that are beginning to incorporate more of the senses include: 3-Dimensional-Technologies that present images realistically enough that you may believe the object is in the room with you. Like in the 3-D movies, if you’re I the cinema you would think that you are in that movie. Automatic speech recognition – Technologies that can capture what you say and distinguish between words and sentences. Like in the lumia phones if there’s incoming messages and your phone is locked.  Your phone will say that you have a text and it will you “say read it or ignore”.  Multimedia – Technologies that simultaneously present information through many forms of media that you can control. Virtual reality- Technologies that present a three-dimensional computer simulation in which you actively and physically participate.Cyber sickness- it is the downside of virtual reality that includes eyestrain, simulator sickness and flashbacks.

There is also the so called “The dramatic changes occurring as a result of and on the Internet.”-changes surrounding the Internet are undoubtedly the most visible, rapidly changing dynamic, mind-boggling and exciting of all the emerging technologies. Two such changes include: first, electronic cash or e-cash (digital cash) it is an electronic representation of cash that you can use to make purchases on the internet. For example, to have e-cash, first you should give real cash like paper money or coins to the electronic bank then the E—bank will give your e-cash. For you to get your product you want. You as the customer should give your e-cash to the internet merchant then when they receive your e-cash they will give the product you have purchased. Then the internet merchants will en-cash your e-cash to the electronic bank and the e-bank will gave the real cash to the internet merchant. Second, converging technologies for communicating through and accessing the Internet, including: internet telephones, cable-ready computers, cable modems and Internet PCs. The all-purpose home computer is what you find in retail stores today that lets you do all of the above.
The role of the wireless revolution in mobilizing people and technology is to connect people and technology without physical cables- what you might refer to as virtual connectivity. It includes: first, for mobilizing people using smart phones-cellular phones that also act as a sending and receiving station for digital page messages, e-mail messages, and faxes and also give you the ability to connect to the Internet. Global positioning system or GPS - 24 earth-orbiting satellites that continuously transmit radio signals that you can use to determine your location. Second, for mobilizing technologies.Wireless local area networks - networks that cover a limited distance in which all component or computers are connected without physical cables.
many emerging technologies will simplify your personal life. Two such emerging technologies include: smart cards and intelligent home appliances. Technologies nowadays are really emerging .

Learning’s in Chapter 3

Learning’s in Chapter 3: strategic and competitive advantage

In chapter 3 it talks about strategic and competitive opportunities. And, so this chapter is all about helping us to find new strategies to help our organization compete. In this chapter it will help us know how to gain competitive advantage, strategies for increasing organizational horsepower and how to meet customers’ expectation. Thus, this chapter will help us know how to use our learning’s in the real world. Learning's not just in the classroom but learning from your own experiences is better because you will really see that it truly happens in this world.

Information technology enables you organization to provide customer products and services when they want them, where they want them and how they want them.  With the help of information technology, in business you can gain competitive advantage by providing the best perceived perfect service at the customers’ moment of value. Gaining competitive advantage is by nurturing the innovation to make it better and to provide renewal and CA also requires supportive strategies to make the good innovation.  Competitive advantage doesn't last very long. Because it’s not easy to maintain competitive advantage.  Customers are the only one who evaluates the competitive advantage of a certain business.

Organization creates their competitive advantage depending on their knowledge about their competitors and knowledge about their own business. Organizational horsepower measures an organizational competitiveness generated through organizational force and organizational speed. Organizational force is meeting customer’s expectation as possible. Examples of organizational force are team and transnational firm. While the organizational speed is meeting customer’s expectation as quickly.Examples of organizational speed are just-in-time (JIT) approach, virtual organization and learning organization.  While the examples of both organizational force and speed is information partnership and timeless and locationless operation.

There are 7 strategies for increasing organizational horsepower. (1) just-in-time (JIT) approach is delivering a product or rendering services when the customer wants it.  (2) Team is a group of people with a shared common goal. (3) Information partnership is an agreement between organizations for the sharing of information to strengthen each partner organization.  A good example of this is the Jollibee and Greenwich, if the Jollibee has a new strategy to make their business profitable they will share their strategy to the Greenwich.  (4) Timeless and locationless operation. Timeless operation means businesses operate without regard to the time. Examples of timeless operation are call center agency, jolibee, seven eleven store and etc. while the locationless operation means businesses operate without regard to the location. Examples of locationles operation are lazada, zalora and other online shoppe through facebook and instagram. Because when you buy products to them they will deliver it wherever you are. (5) Transnational firmsis a type of firm that produces and sells products and services in countries all over the world in coordinated cooperation. (6) Virtual organization is a network of independent organizations linked together by information technology to exploit market opportunities by sharing skills, costs and market access.  And (7) learning organization is an organization whose people are continually discovering how to learn together with other while at the same time altering their organization as a result of what they learn. Through your learning’s you can serve your customer better and faster

Quality is not in the goodness, prettiness or luxury of a product. Product cannot have relatively described by “good quality” or “bad quality”. But quality is meeting customer expectations. Customers expect that you will provide them the perfect service or the customer moment of value. Total quality management (TQM) is meeting customer expectations through their 3 important ingredients: (1) meeting customer expectation– is the number one goal of every business organization. (2) Continuous improvement – competition is everywhere and so, you should make strategies to nurture innovation to make your product or service more profitable. (3) Organizationwide quality ownership – if employees can develop a sense of ownership they can give perfect service.

The Management Information System Challenge and Information Technology Systems

Every aspect of management in the modern age relies heavily on information to thrive. Nothing moves without information and it is generally believed that information is power and that he who has it has power. It is an important resource needed to develop other resources.

The Management Information systems challenge (The MIS Challenge) has three aspects : (1) what businesses do, (2) customer moment of value, and (3) the role of  Information technology.

the first aspect is what businesses do. the role of business is to serve their customers and exceed the customers expectations.Whether its providing telecommunications, food, water services and etc. a business will only survive if they provide perfect service to their customers.the second aspect is customer moment of value has three characteristics: (1) when the customer wants it (time), (2) where the customer wants it (location) and (3) How the customer wants it (Form). for example, If you are the owner of Sandy's bakeshop, to have the customer moment of value you should have many branches and you should trained your bakers to make their work as fast as they could. like if the customer wants to get his/her order on the time they want without delay and the could just get it at the branch near them and you gave them good service. if you saw that your customer was satisfied, you can say that you're business succeed. the third aspect is the role of Information technology. In the business organization the role of IT is to provide the customers with the right information at the right time.this occur through the appropriate use of information delivery. It also help the customers to support and process the information they have.

Information Technology systems are the following: Transaction Processing System (TPS), Customer Integrated System (CIS), Management Information System (MIS), Workgroup Support System (WSS), Decision Support System (DSS), Executive Information System (EIS), and Interorganizational System (IOS).

Transaction Processing System (TPS) is a system that processes transactions that occur in an organization. TPS also performs the following: (1) Capturing the information concerning the order, (2) Creating / processing the information to obtain new information, (3) Conveying the information in its most useful form, and (4) Cradling or storing the information for use at a later time.
Customer Integrated System (CIS) a system where the organization allows the customers to process their own transactions.a very good example is the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) that provides the customers to check their account balance, transfer money from one account to another, and most especially to withdraw money anytime and anywhere. ATM can also help you pay for your utility and telephone bills electronically from your own computer.

Management Information System (MIS) a system that uses information in a database to provide periodic and summarize reports to alert people why a problem or opportunity exists or offer solutions. examples of MIS reports are sales people, defective returns by product line and the number of students in a class.
Workgroup Support System (WSS or WGSS) a system that is designed to improve the performance of teams by supporting the share and flow of information. In an organization WSS also helps them effectively communicate, share information and exchange or share their ideas as they solve a problem.

Decision Support System (DSS) a system that is concerned with the processing of information to support decision-making tasks in environments that requires significant analysis. a good example is, A student making his/her Spreadsheet so that he/she can decide on how he/she will budget his/her monthly expenses and allowance and how much he/she needs for his/her next vacation.
Executive Information System (EIS) a system that is combined with MIS and DSS. It helps the managers to Identify and address problems and Opportunities. EIS also provides the managers to easily create more views to better understand the problem or opportunity and to create strategies for the problems they will encounter.

Interorganizational System (IOS) a system that automates the flow of information between organizations to support the planning, design, development, production and delivery of products and services. CIS is a special form of IOS. these systems allows an organization to communicate electronically with your customer.
